the con man behaving naturally

Some men who aspire to leadership have no intention of living in integrity. They simply crave acclaim, power, influence, and wealth. We see these fakers exposed in every arena—politics, business, sports, religion, entertainment and the arts, science, and the professions.

Steve Martin played a classic charlatan as Rev. Jonas Nightingale in the 1992 movie Leap of Faith. He explained himself to his partner, “I give my people a good show. Manipulators are sneaky. I am obvious.” He had no illusions, or values, and he was not an obviously tortured soul. He was simply a con man.

We see charlatans typecast as villains in many movies and TV shows. Their main concerns are how far they can go and how long they can get away with it.

But what looks like a freer life is actually just a larger jail cell. According to the Big Book of AA, there’s only one kind of alcoholic who’s beyond hope: the one “who is constitutionally incapable of telling the truth.”
